'Gruffalo' Mask 

An easy mask craft project -Great combined with a storytelling activity.

You can use in combination with 'The Gruffalo' website, story or shorter clips

Materials

-Brown A4 card (with drawn-on stencil or pre-cut for younger children)

-Stencil if needed

-White A4 paper (with photocopied stencil if for several children) 

-Large barbecue kebab stick (with sharp end cut off with scissors)

-General materials -prittstick, tape, scissors, crayons

 Stage 1

-Draw outline of Gruffalo head on brown card (use a card stencil if for several children)

-(Cut out if for younger children)

Stage 2

-Children can cut out the photocopied face image (or pre-cut and glue on for younger children)

-Glue on brown card if short of time or for younger children

-Cut 2 horizontal slits (about 5cm long, both about 5cm from bottom of brown card)

-Pierce eye holes (with sharp pencil on a rubber) and cut out circular shapes

Stage 3

-Children colour in the face

Stage 4

-(Children cut out the brown card if they can/not pre-cut)

Stage 5

-Tape the slits at side of the brown card to make a 3-D form

-Tape on stick at the back of the mask in 2 places

(at the cut off sharp part of the stick, just below the eyes covering the cut end and at the bottom of  mask)

Read the story, watch/listen to the song with mask! Paper finger puppets would work well, too.

For the mask, I pre-cut the paper face and stuck on before, pre-cut the card for younger students and combined with handouts of characters from the story. I also used the song link. 

It was a craft session (1 hour) before a storytelling session and worked really well.
