Desk Organiser

Here's a useful craft idea!

Great for 'Back to School' projects
A useful craft idea for organising and to practise classroom vocabulary, too

Materials
-1 Kitchen roll and 1 toilet roll
(Or can use 2 toilet rolls for a smaller model)
-Paint (One colour but could use black/white to vary shade)
-Scissors
-Ruler
-Glue ('Pritt-Stick' is ideal)
-Decoration ...paper/card for words, wrapping paper, coloured paper, etc for edging and extra detail
*Stapler if you prefer to staple/glue the rolls together

Stage 1
-Flatten (but don't fold) one end of the kitchen roll. Cut off the end at around 4cm ...and save it
-Use the main part of the kitchen roll, the end part of the kitchen roll and a toilet roll
...Or use 2 toilet rolls -one uncut and the other with 2 thirds cut off, using both parts
Adapt the same slotting idea with the smaller model
*You could pre-draw or pre-cut these for younger students making this project
**Alternatively, you could place glue on the touching sides of the rolls, place together and staple the underside of the rolls to secure. If you have time to pre-cut the rolls, the slotting method may be easier

Stage 2
-Cut Cardboard Rolls:
 *The width of the 2 cuts has to be the same as the cuts of the corresponding roll it slots into
You could use a stencil (like the one below ..bend it slightly or cut stencil from a toilet roll) to keep the size consistent
-For the larger model (1 kitchen roll and 1 toilet roll), cut 2 vertical slits around 4cm from one edge of the kitchen roll
-Repeat with one edge of a toilet roll
-On the other end of the toilet roll, on the opposite side, cut 2 vertical slits around 2cm
-Repeat with the off-cut from the end of the kitchen roll
-Slot together

Stage 3

-Paint the rolls. You can use black, white or a similar shade to vary the colours for the different rolls

(I painted the rolls after I slotted them together)

 

Stage 4
-Once dry, add decoration -You could use classroom vocabulary
-If desired, add trim to the edge of the rolls -Glue around outside edge of roll, stick a rectangular strip of paper horizontally around the roll (half on the outside edge of roll, the other half can be folded inwards)

These ideas are great for 'Back to School' projects and to use to practise classroom vocabulary.
